Many of the major coast towns like Iraklion, Malia, and Hersonisos have fancy resort hotels with swimming pools, Zorba the Greek restaurants, golf and so on. If you go for that sort of thing, which many people do, then you have some of the best in Greece with a backdrop of one of the most facinating and beautiful islands in the country. If you are the adventerous type just take the boat to Chania, the bus to Omalos and walk down the Samarian Gorge or explore the mountains and the less impacted west coast. For getting to your hotel in Athens from the port of Pireaus I recommend George the Famous Taxi Driver . Arriving by ferry there are usually many more people than taxis so it is a good idea to arrange a transfer either through your travel agent or George. For transfers from the port and airport to your hotel in Crete I recommend Lefteris the Cretan Taxi Driver who also does tours of the island.
